An outdoor family session full of warm light, open fields, and the kind of candid moments you can't plan for.
Family sessions are where I get to slow down and really see people. The way a dad scoops up his kid mid-laugh. The way a mom looks at her family when she thinks nobody's watching. The Jaynes gave me all of that and more — and I've been thinking about this session ever since.
Fatima reached out wanting something natural — no stiff poses, no matching outfits that feel forced, just their family exactly as they are. That kind of brief is honestly my favorite kind, because it means I get to just follow people around and document what's already there. And what was already there with this family was a whole lot of warmth.
We found a gorgeous open field with tall dried grass catching the late-afternoon light, and from the moment we started walking, the kids just took off. Dad scooped up the youngest, mom pulled her daughter close, and I kept my distance and kept shooting. Nobody was performing for the camera. They were just being themselves — and that's exactly what makes a session like this work.
The moment where all four of them turned toward each other laughing — I genuinely don't know what was said, but whatever it was, it was exactly the right thing. That frame is one of those images that reminds me why I do this work. It's not staged, it's not directed — it just happened, and I was lucky enough to be there with my camera.
And the walking-away shot at the end of the session is quietly one of my favorites of the year. There's something about watching a family move through a space together — the way they naturally gravitate toward each other, the little one trailing behind, the light falling just right — that gets me every time. That image is going to look beautiful on a wall for a very long time.
